Get downloadable books at your local library

Local public libraries have expanded their collections with the addition of downloadable audiobooks and electronic books. These new materials are available in the new Download Zone on the Four County Library System's website www.4CLS.org. They can be downloaded to a computer and many electronic readers, including the Nook, Kobo, Literati, Pandigital, Sony's e-reader, Apple's iPad and Amazon's Kindle, along with MP3 players, the iPhone, Android and other portable devices.

In addition to hundreds of book titles initially available through OverDrive, the service provider for the Download Zone, more than 30,000 other titles are available through Project Gutenberg, the first and largest single collection of free electronic books. More titles will be added as this new service develops.

Downloaded eBooks have a two-week loan period; downloaded audiobooks have a one-week loan period. Both feature automatic returrn, so there will never be a fine for an overdue item. Items cannot be renewed. Currently 35 libraries in the Four County Library System participate in the Download Zone.

For the past 50 years the Four County Library System has provided consolidated services that help 42 public libraries serve communities in Broome, Chenango, Delaware and Otsego Counties.

Executive Director, Four County Library System

The Board of Trustees of the Four County Library System (4CLS) seeks a creative, energetic, and skilled leader to work collaboratively with member libraries, trustees and staff after the retirement of our 23-year executive director in April. The 4CLS is a cooperative system that serves 42 rural, suburban and urban libraries in Broome, Chenango, Delaware, and Otsego Counties in central New York, with headquarters in Vestal, NY. This scenic area is located between the Catskill and Adirondack Mountains and the Finger Lakes region of beautiful upstate New York, with easy access to New York City, Montreal, Boston, and other eastern seaboard areas. The Executive Director oversees an organization with a budget of $2.5M and 28 full and part-time employees.

The position requires a candidate with strong communication skills, an active commitment to public libraries, strong fiscal management skills, and the ability to build consensus and action around a vision for the future. The successful candidate must be willing to live in our service area and travel regularly to the member libraries and work together with their directors and trustees, consolidating the member libraries’ needs into a system-wide plan. Minimum qualifications are an MLS from an ALA-accredited institution, NYS Public Librarian’s Certificate or eligibility, and eight years of increasingly responsible professional library experience at least two years of which shall have been in an administrative capacity.

Salary is negotiable, beginning at $80,000 and includes a competitive benefits package with New York State Retirement.
